Ohhhh Wii...

The Wii, I've decided, is out to get me. First off, last week, the Wii asked me how my pregnant wife looked (she's also set up on the Wii Fit.) The problem was that it gave me options of "Slimmer" (which with the baby belly technically she's not), "Bigger" (we all know how that one would turn out, "The same" (which, she has thinned out in some places - this was the option I chose). Regardless, NONE of these options were designed to create a healthy relationship... fie on you Wii!! Second, the Wii called me fat... as I detailed in my last post. So the Wii and I are still locking horns as today, it stated that I GAINED 2 pounds and made my Mii character fat, replete with the WHAA WHAA WHAAA sound. Not happy. 201 is the number of the week and it's not helping that because my daughter is home, I can't go out for my walk in the morning. My issues with actually losing the weight are two-fold: food choices and lack of exercise. While I walk 3 miles a day, I'm not doing any weightlifting or true cardio. I think I need to fire up the P90X and really get moving on it. The last time I did it, I did the first DVD and then fell off the wagon. I know myself and if I get into a routine, I'll stick with it. As soon as I'm off the routine, I'm off it and it takes some time for me to get back on track. It starts today! Second is that I've been making some really bad food decisions. White Rice, French Bread, Ice Cream, Pancakes... they've all been on the board of fare lately and they're dooming my diet. My tactic for this week is to get moving, eat more regular meals and be careful about what I eat. In addition... WATER!! I've not been drinking enough and I think it's having a contributory affect on my weight gain... Well, until next week! Hopefully there will be less of me!

No weight but a bit of progress

Short post this week. But I had a few breakthroughs...
1. Stopped eating like crap... for the most part... Epic fail on a french bread sandwich of Nutella & the pride of Lynn, MA FLUFFERNUTTER!! Other than that, pretty healthy overall. Small consistent meals packed with protein. Could use to up my fiber content and water intake.
2. Actually ran for a quarter mile today during my 3 mile walk.
3. Feeling better. Putting on the pounds actually makes you tired... there's more of you to carry around and I'm starting to get some energy back.

Will have an official Wii Weight for you tomorrow AM.

Best of luck out there!

Bad Bad Bad Bad Bad

Hmmm... it would appear that I've not been as focused as I could have been on my weight loss. The proof is in the pudding... I'm currently at the highest weight I've ever been... the bathroom scale shows almost 200lbs. Not good on a 5'8" frame... I've decided that my issues again largely are caused by sloth and impulsiveness. For me, what its going to take is setting out my meals in advance. My snacks seem to already be in a good place, either pre-packaged cheese or yogurt or better yet fruit. The problem comes when temptation is in the house, cake for example has been the most prevalent as my birthday, my daughter, sister and father's birthdays are all right around this time of yet.
In the good news column... I've started walking every day. I've mapped out a route of 3 miles and while I'm not breaking any land speed records, I am moving for about an hour every day. Also, I found a GREAT website for the Nintendo Wii that maps out exercise routines. My issue with the Wii is that it doesn't give you a whole ton of guidance as to what you should be doing. The website posted below creates an entire routine for you. I think that ramping this up to a 30 - 45 minute routine and coupling it with a diet that isn't designed to kill me should help. The next post I do will be next week and I'll be using the Wii as my weight measurement tool as it allows me to track. My other idea is to keep a food log which I'll share with you as well.

8/3/10:
Height: 5ft. 8in.
Weight: 198lbs
BMI: 30.1 - Just crossed into obese territory... thanks a ton there point one...
Goal weight - 165lbs

Goals for the week:
1. Track food intake
2. Increase activity - Wii fit starting with 15 minute workouts after my daily constitutional
3. Water Water Water... I've been drinking too much diet soda lately. Not good. Studies have shown that you're almost better off drinking the regular sugared variety
4. Weight loss: 3 lbs (starting small with the intent of feeling rewarded...)

Well rehab is for quitters and relapses happen! (thank you Lindsay L for showing that dreams are indeed possible.)
To all out there working to make yourselves better, good luck!!

Fatty Fat Fat Fat...

Sloth sadly has yet again gotten the better of me... I've been following the diet fairly well, but I've had some slips. My most notable as of late, the Denny's Meat Lover's breakfast... Soooo terribly delicious. In general though, I'm eating a healthy breakfast, a decent lunch and some good snacks in between. My life saver has been Hummus, Carrots and those individual packets of string cheese. My exercise as of late has been relegated to the bagpipes and the occasional walk. However, tomorrow AM, I'll be starting back on the Wii fit as that seemed to be able to hold my attention the longest. For some reason, I can't seem to get into the P90X and I think it's just a lack of routine. Either way, we progress on. I don't have a weigh in for you yet, but the struggle continues. The good news is, I feel better and I'm looking a bit better. We'll see how it progresses! The more I write in this thing, the guiltier I'll feel so that should help! Last I checked, with diet alone, I'm down around 11 lbs!

Best of luck out there!

Down 11 lbs!

Current Weight: 184lbs.

Admittedly, it's been a long time since I posted. I'm in week 3 of South Beach and it's working marvelously. Regardless of the fact that I've cheated almost every week, I'm starting to make some real progress. I still have yet to start the exercise program. Procrastination again is rearing it's ugly head. I have one obstacle/opportunity right now, I'm currently unemployed. This provides a problem in my diet as I may not be able to afford some of the food, vis a vis the fish element of the south beach diet. However it allows me quite a bit more time to work on the exercise element. I've been pretty good about not cheating AS MUCH these past two weeks, however I've got my top three cheats:

1. Ice Cream - The wife bought it and I've probably had two bowls so far... not bad, but certainly not a habit I want to get back into.
2. McDonald's Shamrock Shake - That's right! It's March! Nothing says Irish Pride like the deliciousness of the minty goodness that is the Shamrock Shake. Generally speaking, its a bad idea all around!
3. Harpoon Island Creek Oyster Stout - Just had it today. I have heard a lot of buzz about this beer and decided to cheat. So good!

Really though, I've been good about my diet generally speaking. The food on the SBD is generally very good! I've moved onto "Stage two" which means basically that they've started to reintroduce carbs into my diet. I've had a few things like cereal and whole wheat bread that are now part of the diet. A lot of people complain about the lack of carbs and frankly, I'm doing OK. There's been no fatigue, no crabiness (that anyone has admitted to), frankly I'm doing well! This week is going to be the week! I'm excited to press forward and get some exercise under my belt. It is my intent not to cheat this week. I've got too much in the way of good food in my house to mess this up! We'll see.

Best of luck to all of you trying to get in shape out there. I'd appreciate hearing your story!

Closing the gap!

Wow... despite my MANY cheats this week, my pants are fitting better and there's less wheezing as I ascend the stairs. However, this week I have on several occasions succumb to temptation.

1. McDonalds... Damn, I was so close to executing well on this. Two egg McMuffins without the muffin and then I ordered a sausage biscuit and ate the whole thing, carbs and all. I'm relatively sure that the sausage is not on the menu and I KNOW that the Biscuit isn't!

2. Pumpkin Bread: I had it sitting up in the cupboard and decided to make the mix. It's proved to be a really bad idea. I think I've had a slice every day since I made it.

3. Sushi: Last week was a long week for reasons I won't go into. I needed a last minute meal and that seemed to be closest to what I needed without grabbing a salad. While it's not a terrible meal, it does have enriched rice which doesn't exactly work within the bounds of the SBD (South Beach Diet not "Silent but deadly")

4. This one was the motherload... I really fell off the wagon with this one... Foot Long, Steak, cheese, Pepper & Onion sub and Onion Rings. You may officially call me fatty fat fat fat. This one was AWESOME... but I'm sure that I'll regret it eventually...

I think they key to my success on the Southbeach diet is going to be preparation. Today, I spent almost an hour putting together meals for the week and mapping out the things I plan on eating. I've been introduced to a few meals and snacks this week that ordinarily, I wouldn't have thought of. One that was interesting and fit the bill was the Cucumber Rounds with Smoked Salmon. Good stuff! The only description I can give it is "clean". It has a rich smokeyness balanced with the smooth crispness of the cucumber. It was excellent. Another surprise is the ricotta desserts allowed in the diet. Simple construction, 1/2 a cup of Ricotta Cheese, a sweet & low packet and vanilla extract. It's surprisingly good and does wonders for my late night sweet tooth. I've also been pleasantly surprised with the fish dishes. I don't ordinarily cook fish so I'm still working this stuff out as I go. Other than that, the diet is fairly good, but again requires quite a bit of preparation if you're going to do it right. The costs I complained about last week seem to be negating themselves as most of the recipies are for multiple diners and it's actually saved me a little time this week in the fact that I now have meals set up in ziplock containers.

The one note I'll make about the SBD is the fact that its introduced three things into my diet that I've been missing. Salad, Fish & Dairy. It's been a welcome change to my usual diet of well... CRAP.

Either way, I'm making progress. The one thing I've not incorporated is the excersize. It's not been a good week for starting new things... This coming week, I plan on standing up and doing this full bore!

Good luck to you out there attempting to get in better shape. I'm there with ya!

Week one: Under my better fitting belt!

Well, it's been just about a week now in Project: Antichunk and things are progressing well! I'm down 5 lbs and that's WITHOUT exercise! I really do need to incorporate that, however as if memory serves, the LDL (Lousy) Cholesterol is a smidge high. I didn't expect this to be the case, but temptation is EVERYWHERE!! I've cut off the beer consumption apparently at the exact WRONG time in my social calendar! I played Poker Last night at a friends house and I felt like Agnes the 68 year old bar fly drinking my vodka tonics at the end of the table. However it's all been worth it.

Current Weight - 190lbs
Still 5'8"... unless I've been sleeping funny...

My temptations this week:
White Chocolate Macadamia nut cookies. (DANGER!!) - My daughter ate these at lunch the other day and I almost ripped it out of her hand... seriously man, get a grip, they're not THAT good!

Rice: A HUGE no no on the first week of SouthBeach, especially the enriched rice as the enriching process takes most of the fiber out so that it cooks quicker. I did stray a little while having Sashimi with my sister the other night and I had a few mouthfuls of white rice... I'm not perfect!

McDonald's Biscuits: For years, my wife and I have started errand day (generally Saturday) with breakfast somewhere. As of late, a cheap breakfast that fits within the budget has been McDonald's. I did just what the diet said to do, grabbed two egg McMuffins (which are two for a buck by the way...) and ate them without the muffin part. Pretty good, although it's not that satisfying. I ended up picking off my daughter's plate as her appetite wore down... A little hashbrown, some pancake a half a biscuit. Again, a moment of weakness that I'm VERY consiously aware of. Ugh...

As previously stated: BEER... It's not something that I keep in the house generally and it's certainly not something I crave... but when I sat down to have my Sirloin burger, I couldn't help but think that it was missing something!

Generally speaking, the Southbeach diet is actually quite satisfying. They put snacks in that, although a little weird are actually pretty satisfying - Oddest yet has been the Cottage Cheese, Tomato and Cucumber concoction I ate today. It was OK, but not something I would have put together myself. The difficult part is actually planning for the meals. There have been a few nights where I apparently should have made stuff the night before, the Guspacho(sp)for example was one that should have been sitting all night as opposed to the 30 seconds before I threw it down my gullet. LOTS of Lettuce, some meat, it's actually been pretty good and the plates I put together, with very little effort have an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Again, cost is somewhat of an issue, but I think that in general, I'm not spending that much more than I usually would. The other issue I'm having is how much to buy. The recipes in the Southbeach book are built for several people... It's JUST me on this run so I'm going to have to plan more carefully as I progress forward.

Photos: None that I'll show you yet, but I took the Tony Horton P90X photos this week of my pasty white Irishness... I am a vision I tell you... (cue Wolf Whistle) I'll post these pics as I progress closer towards my goal. I've always said that I'd never get a tattoo as there's no part of my anatomy that I would want to bring attention to. These pics show why!

Well, I must press on to other things today, however week one has gone pretty well so far. Looking forward to kicking my own butt next week, resisting temptation and pushing to get the lbs off!

Good luck out there!
