Wow... despite my MANY cheats this week, my pants are fitting better and there's less wheezing as I ascend the stairs. However, this week I have on several occasions succumb to temptation.
1. McDonalds... Damn, I was so close to executing well on this. Two egg McMuffins without the muffin and then I ordered a sausage biscuit and ate the whole thing, carbs and all. I'm relatively sure that the sausage is not on the menu and I KNOW that the Biscuit isn't!
2. Pumpkin Bread: I had it sitting up in the cupboard and decided to make the mix. It's proved to be a really bad idea. I think I've had a slice every day since I made it.
3. Sushi: Last week was a long week for reasons I won't go into. I needed a last minute meal and that seemed to be closest to what I needed without grabbing a salad. While it's not a terrible meal, it does have enriched rice which doesn't exactly work within the bounds of the SBD (South Beach Diet not "Silent but deadly")
4. This one was the motherload... I really fell off the wagon with this one... Foot Long, Steak, cheese, Pepper & Onion sub and Onion Rings. You may officially call me fatty fat fat fat. This one was AWESOME... but I'm sure that I'll regret it eventually...
I think they key to my success on the Southbeach diet is going to be preparation. Today, I spent almost an hour putting together meals for the week and mapping out the things I plan on eating. I've been introduced to a few meals and snacks this week that ordinarily, I wouldn't have thought of. One that was interesting and fit the bill was the Cucumber Rounds with Smoked Salmon. Good stuff! The only description I can give it is "clean". It has a rich smokeyness balanced with the smooth crispness of the cucumber. It was excellent. Another surprise is the ricotta desserts allowed in the diet. Simple construction, 1/2 a cup of Ricotta Cheese, a sweet & low packet and vanilla extract. It's surprisingly good and does wonders for my late night sweet tooth. I've also been pleasantly surprised with the fish dishes. I don't ordinarily cook fish so I'm still working this stuff out as I go. Other than that, the diet is fairly good, but again requires quite a bit of preparation if you're going to do it right. The costs I complained about last week seem to be negating themselves as most of the recipies are for multiple diners and it's actually saved me a little time this week in the fact that I now have meals set up in ziplock containers.
The one note I'll make about the SBD is the fact that its introduced three things into my diet that I've been missing. Salad, Fish & Dairy. It's been a welcome change to my usual diet of well... CRAP.
Either way, I'm making progress. The one thing I've not incorporated is the excersize. It's not been a good week for starting new things... This coming week, I plan on standing up and doing this full bore!
Good luck to you out there attempting to get in better shape. I'm there with ya!

Week one: Under my better fitting belt!
Well, it's been just about a week now in Project: Antichunk and things are progressing well! I'm down 5 lbs and that's WITHOUT exercise! I really do need to incorporate that, however as if memory serves, the LDL (Lousy) Cholesterol is a smidge high. I didn't expect this to be the case, but temptation is EVERYWHERE!! I've cut off the beer consumption apparently at the exact WRONG time in my social calendar! I played Poker Last night at a friends house and I felt like Agnes the 68 year old bar fly drinking my vodka tonics at the end of the table. However it's all been worth it.
Current Weight - 190lbs
Still 5'8"... unless I've been sleeping funny...
My temptations this week:
White Chocolate Macadamia nut cookies. (DANGER!!) - My daughter ate these at lunch the other day and I almost ripped it out of her hand... seriously man, get a grip, they're not THAT good!
Rice: A HUGE no no on the first week of SouthBeach, especially the enriched rice as the enriching process takes most of the fiber out so that it cooks quicker. I did stray a little while having Sashimi with my sister the other night and I had a few mouthfuls of white rice... I'm not perfect!
McDonald's Biscuits: For years, my wife and I have started errand day (generally Saturday) with breakfast somewhere. As of late, a cheap breakfast that fits within the budget has been McDonald's. I did just what the diet said to do, grabbed two egg McMuffins (which are two for a buck by the way...) and ate them without the muffin part. Pretty good, although it's not that satisfying. I ended up picking off my daughter's plate as her appetite wore down... A little hashbrown, some pancake a half a biscuit. Again, a moment of weakness that I'm VERY consiously aware of. Ugh...
As previously stated: BEER... It's not something that I keep in the house generally and it's certainly not something I crave... but when I sat down to have my Sirloin burger, I couldn't help but think that it was missing something!
Generally speaking, the Southbeach diet is actually quite satisfying. They put snacks in that, although a little weird are actually pretty satisfying - Oddest yet has been the Cottage Cheese, Tomato and Cucumber concoction I ate today. It was OK, but not something I would have put together myself. The difficult part is actually planning for the meals. There have been a few nights where I apparently should have made stuff the night before, the Guspacho(sp)for example was one that should have been sitting all night as opposed to the 30 seconds before I threw it down my gullet. LOTS of Lettuce, some meat, it's actually been pretty good and the plates I put together, with very little effort have an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Again, cost is somewhat of an issue, but I think that in general, I'm not spending that much more than I usually would. The other issue I'm having is how much to buy. The recipes in the Southbeach book are built for several people... It's JUST me on this run so I'm going to have to plan more carefully as I progress forward.
Photos: None that I'll show you yet, but I took the Tony Horton P90X photos this week of my pasty white Irishness... I am a vision I tell you... (cue Wolf Whistle) I'll post these pics as I progress closer towards my goal. I've always said that I'd never get a tattoo as there's no part of my anatomy that I would want to bring attention to. These pics show why!
Well, I must press on to other things today, however week one has gone pretty well so far. Looking forward to kicking my own butt next week, resisting temptation and pushing to get the lbs off!
Good luck out there!

Day one complete
2/1/10
I've not done a lot of the initial measurements that I should be, however I did want to give a quick snapshot of height & weight for you to give you an idea of what we're dealing with. As procrastination is one of the reasons that I'm in the shape I'm in, I'm not totally thrilled with myself. Tomorrow I'll do all the P90X measurements, number of pushups, chest & belly size etc.
Height - 5 foot 8 inches
Weight - 195lbs
195 is literally the heaviest I've ever been, so milestones being what they are... I thought back to highschool today and I graduated at my current height at a total of 135 lbs (aka Crack-head thin). While I don't ever want to be that skinny again, 165 generally is a weight that should be relatively healthy considering my size and build.
Today, was overall, pretty standard. I was suprised at how much food was allowed with the Southbeach diet. I'm doing ok... fighting tempation and in general, not at all hungry. I was even impressed by the dessert, at which initially I turned my nose up (ricotta cheese with a sweetener & vanilla extract. Not bad and it fit the bill. Dinner was actually kind of impressive looking, Salad, Salmon and steamed asparagus. Filling and visually stunning (if I may say so myself...).
I've decided I'm going to ease into the exersize thing. All too often I've gone great guns for the first few weeks, only to loose steam a bit later. I've got some goals in mind, like, I'd like to be able to run 5 miles without keeling over... I'd like to be able to do more pullups than my current Whuu (almost one).
Either way, food-wise, tomorrow looks to be interesting and I'm looking forward to the beginning of my workout routine. As Tony Horton says, Do your best and forget the rest! As cult like a following as this guy has, I've done a few of the routines and they actually do kick your butt. Again, I'm excited for tomorrow and I'm ready to go!!
Cheers!
